Sefton Park in Liverpool hosted 5,000 people last night (May 2) for an event headlined by Stockport indie pop band, Blossoms. Other musicians on the line-up included chart topping Wigan band, The Lathums and Liverpool singer-songwriter Zuzu.
The concert had the largest number of people in attendance since the pandemic began and was put on as part of the national Events Research Programme which aims to explore how to host large events safely. Those who were luckily enough to be living in the Liverpool City Region and grab themselves a ticket, were not required to wear face coverings or follow social distance measures, and partied legally just like normal times. However, with the added requirement of taking a lateral flow test one day prior to the event and five days after.
Doors to the music event opened at 4:30pm with eager fans waiting outside socialising and sharing their excitement with each other. The scenes at Sefton saw people without tickets sitting outside on deck chairs in the rain with drinks ready to listen to indie hits - scouse spirit aye!
Blossoms gave tribute to Liverpool icon’s The Beatles with ‘Paperback Writer’ as part of their set. With the whole of the UK looking to the historic event after the halt of live music in 2020, there's no doubt even Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr were a tiny bit jealous of the Manchester fellas.
The atmosphere in Liverpool this weekend is something most of us can only describe as a fever dream – singing along with strangers to the top of your lungs, queuing an hour for one drink and hovering over a stinking portaloo. Even having somebody throw a cup of piss on you in a crowd doesn’t sound too bad anymore.
Take a look at some of the photo's below captured before the gig.
Speaking to attendee’s from the gig about their experience, Ben Fildes, a 20-year-old from Bebington stated: "When we went to the gig, we had to provide photo ID and the negative test result, then we went through security, and then we were in. It was really weird it felt like the virus had just gone overnight, I’m not particularly fussed over it all anyway, it was like any normal pre covid gig. I didn’t hear one person mention it which makes a change because it’s all I’ve heard for the past year". Summarising his time at the event, Ben said "The good times are on the way back for sure!".
Those who were able to go to the gig will definitely remember it for the rest of their lives, especially this couple below who shared that they got engaged during the Blossoms performance:
For those who didn’t attend the monumental event, the FOMO (fear of missing out) levels are through the roof. But hopefully the data received from Saturday’s event means that further tastes of normality are coming soon for everybody in the UK, with large-scale music festivals on the cards from June 21st.
Power to the people, the music is back.
